Multiple Literacies and Goal Setting

Students will be able to demonstrate how they marshal/leverage their multiple literacies to support their writing processes

Stories in the Sky

For this artifact, I was required to write a short response based on videos and articles about constellations.

I demonstrated that I could piece different types of media together for my ideas while creating my response. I chose to write about both the story and the constellation of Jason and the Argonauts. I wrote about how the constellation correlated with the constellation that was the Argo ship from the story. Since I took Latin in high school, I had my fair share of Greek mythology. I compared the media to what I learned from my past experiences of reading the story.

This assignment helped me write a response that was based on different types of media and my own experience with what I know about the prompt already.

Seventh Night Poems

For this artifact, I demonstrate how I was able to correlate the Chinese origin of the poems that inspired the Japanese Tanabata festival.

The assignment required students to read about the origins of the poems and also the Japanese festival that celebrates the two lovers reuniting. I wrote about why the Oxherd and the Weaver Maid were separated, and how their love symbolizes the two constellations meeting up during the festival. I also go into how the story has a big impact on Japanese culture, which mixes with tradition, astronomy, and mythology.

This assignment helped me use what I knew about the culture and stories and how they are passed down. I was also able to bring the history and poems together to help me understand the topic better.
